Review Process

Last updated: May 29, 2026

MoneyAbroadGuide evaluates financial products, services, and tools from the perspective of newcomers, immigrants, and expats navigating the U.S. and Canadian financial systems. Our review process is designed to give readers honest, firsthand assessments — not promotional content.

How We Review Financial Products

Our team reviews banks, credit cards, money transfer services, and savings accounts by evaluating them against the criteria that matter most to newcomers:

  • Accessibility: Can the product be opened with a passport, ITIN, or foreign ID? What documents are required?
  • Fees: What are the monthly maintenance fees, ATM fees, wire transfer costs, and foreign transaction fees?
  • Newcomer-specific features: Are there fee waivers for new arrivals? Is there multilingual support? Does the bank have experience with ITIN applications?
  • Digital experience: How functional is the mobile app? Is online account opening available for non-residents?
  • Customer service quality: How responsive and helpful is support for non-standard requests (e.g., ITIN-only applications)?
  • Transparency: Are fees and eligibility requirements clearly disclosed?

Research Methods

We gather data through several methods:

  • Direct testing: Where possible, our team opens accounts personally or tests services firsthand.
  • Primary source verification: We review official bank documentation, regulatory filings, and government publications (IRS, CRA, CFPB, FCAC) to verify product terms.
  • Branch-level verification: For products where branch-level policy differs from national policy (common in newcomer banking), we verify directly with specific branch locations.
  • Reader feedback: We incorporate firsthand accounts from our community of 15,000+ expat readers when they contribute relevant experiences.
  • Regular updates: All reviews are audited quarterly or when significant product changes occur. Every review page displays a “Last reviewed” date.

Affiliate Relationships and Review Independence

Some products we review pay us a commission when readers sign up through our links. This commercial relationship does not influence our ratings, recommendations, or editorial conclusions. We review products based on their merits for newcomers, regardless of affiliate status.

Products we are not affiliated with receive the same editorial standard as affiliated products. We explicitly call out cases where a non-affiliated product is superior to an affiliated alternative. See our Affiliate Disclosure and Editorial Policy for full details.

Rating Methodology

When we assign ratings or rankings to financial products, our scoring is based on weighted criteria relevant to newcomers. Typical weighting:

  • Accessibility for non-residents (30%): Document flexibility, ITIN acceptance, online opening options
  • Fee structure (25%): Monthly fees, waiver conditions, ATM network, international transfer costs
  • Newcomer features (20%): Credit card access without local history, multilingual support, newcomer programs
  • Digital experience (15%): Mobile app quality, online banking functionality
  • Customer service (10%): Response times, quality of support for non-standard requests

Review Update Schedule

Financial products change frequently. We update our reviews when:

  • A product’s fees, rates, or eligibility requirements change materially
  • A bank launches or discontinues a newcomer-specific program
  • New regulatory requirements affect how a product operates
  • Reader feedback identifies a significant change in product quality or accessibility

All review pages display a “Last reviewed” date. If you notice information that appears outdated, please contact our editorial team at editorial@moneyabroadguide.com.
