ToggleWho I Am
I’m Talal Eddaouahiri, founder of Money Abroad Guide. I was born and raised in Morocco and moved to the United States in 2015. Like many newcomers, I arrived prepared with savings and plans — and still hit walls the guides never mentioned: no credit score, confusing bank requirements, hidden transfer fees, and financial jargon written for people who already understood the system.
I built Money Abroad Guide so immigrants, expats, and international students don’t have to learn those lessons the expensive way.
Experience That Shapes Our Guides
Everything we publish is grounded in real situations, not generic finance theory.
Immigration & cross-border life
- Relocated from Morocco to the United States (2015)
- Frequent travel and banking experience across the USA, Canada, Spain, and Morocco
- Direct exposure to exchange rates, remittances, and how different countries treat newcomers financially
United States — banking & credit
- Opened U.S. bank accounts without an established credit history
- Built a U.S. credit score from zero — secured cards, bureau reporting, utilization timing
- Researched ITIN-friendly banks, newcomer credit cards, and tax basics for nonresidents
Canada — banking & integration
- Compared newcomer banking packages (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC)
- Documented credit-building paths and renting without Canadian credit history
International money transfers
- Personally compared 20+ transfer providers (Wise, Remitly, OFX, Xe, and others)
- Focus on real recipient amounts — fees plus FX margin, not marketing headlines
Professional background
- Retail banking, customer relations, and financial services
- Educational content only — not CPA, CFP, attorney, or investment-advisor licensure.
Topics I Cover
- Banking (USA & Canada): Account opening, newcomer programs, ITIN/SSN paths
- Credit building: Secured cards, FICO vs VantageScore, 12-month timelines
- Money transfers: Provider comparisons, hidden FX spreads
- Budgeting: City-level costs for Toronto, Vancouver, NYC, Houston, and more
- Taxes (educational): ITIN, W-8BEN, 1040-NR — with official-source links
